When did each Japanese era begin?
Meiji began on 23 October 1868, Taishō on 30 July 1912, Shōwa on 25 December 1926, Heisei on 8 January 1989 and Reiwa on 1 May 2019. A year in which the era changed belongs to two eras: 2019 is Heisei 31 until 30 April and Reiwa 1 from 1 May. The first year of an era is written 元年 (gannen) in Japanese.
How do ROC (Minguo) years work?
The Republic of China calendar, used in Taiwan, counts from 1912, which is Minguo year 1. Subtract 1911 from the Gregorian year: 2026 is ROC 115. Years before 1912 are counted as “before the Republic”, and there is no year 0.
Sexagenary cycle and zodiac
The cycle of 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches repeats every 60 years; 2026 is bing-wu (丙午), a Fire Horse year. In the table the cycle follows the Gregorian year; traditionally it changes at Lunar New Year or Lichun (around 4 February). The age column shows the age reached on this year’s birthday.
