How to test your microphone

Press Start and allow access when your browser asks. Speak at a normal volume: the level meter should jump into the green and the waveform should move. Then record 5 seconds and play it back to hear how you actually sound, including background noise, echo or crackling.

Mic not working?

If the meter does not move, check the device list: your browser may be using a different microphone (for example the webcam mic or a disconnected headset). Make sure the mic is not muted by a hardware switch, and that your system privacy settings allow the browser to use it. On Windows, look in Settings › Privacy › Microphone; on macOS, System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone. If another app such as Zoom or Discord is holding the mic, close it and try again.

Is this private?

Yes. The sound is analysed and recorded entirely in your browser using the Web Audio and MediaRecorder APIs. Nothing is sent to a server, and the recording disappears when you leave the page.
