How to write a cheque amount in words

Write the whole-dollar part in words, then “and”, then the cents as a fraction of 100: $1,234.50 becomes One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 50/100. Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any space left over so nothing can be added. Hyphenate numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, and leave out “and” inside the hundreds so the only “and” marks the cents.

Chinese and Japanese amounts

Banks in Taiwan and China require the financial numerals 壹貳參肆伍陸柒捌玖 with 拾佰仟萬億, because the everyday 一二三 are easy to alter. Zeros inside the number are written as 零, and amounts without cents end in 整. In Japan, receipts and contracts use daiji such as 壱, 弐, 参 and 拾, written as 金壱萬弐千円也.
